Sodium chloride
Sodium chloride (NaCl, common salt)
Sodium chloride (NaCl, common salt) is a white crystalline, highly soluble salt used in oilfield fluids mainly for density, shale control and freeze/hydrate protection.

- Raises mud and brine density to help control formation pressure in both onshore and offshore wells.
- Reduces shale swelling by high salinity (lower water activity), improving wellbore stability in water-based drilling fluids.
- Enables safe drilling through salt (halite) zones using saturated NaCl brine so the formation salt does not dissolve and wash out.
- Helps prevent freezing and gas hydrate formation in cold surface and subsea conditions, especially offshore.
