Starch
Starch (drilling starch)
Starch (drilling starch) is a modified natural polymer (from corn, potato, etc.) used in water-based drilling fluids mainly as a fluid-loss reducer and secondary viscosifier.

- Fluid-loss control: Hydrated starch particles form a thin, low-permeability filter cake on the wellbore wall, reducing filtrate invasion into permeable formations and helping maintain borehole stability.
- Borehole protection: By limiting fluid loss, it reduces risks of formation damage, stuck pipe and washouts, especially in low- to moderate-temperature wells.
- Rheology support: Certain grades (HV/LV, HT/LT starch) slightly increase viscosity and help suspend cuttings without excessively thickening the mud when dosed correctly.
- Food industry: Thickener and stabilizer in sauces, dairy, bakery and snacks
- Paper and textiles: Improves strength, surface finish and printability; used for sizing and textile finishing.
