Thinners & dispersants
Thinners & dispersants
Thinners & dispersants are drilling-fluid additives used to reduce viscosity/gel strength and keep solids dispersed so the mud stays pumpable and stable.

- In drilling fluids (onshore & offshore)
- Control rheology when solids and contaminants build up, keeping mud thin enough to circulate without excessive pressure.
- Disperse clay and weighting solids (deflocculate), preventing gelation, mud rings and high ECD in both land and offshore wells.
- Often improve fluid-loss performance by helping form a thin, tight filter cake rather than a thick, spongy one.
- Other Features
- Water-well and HDD/trenchless drilling: Used to thin bentonite muds, break mud rings and improve flow before cementing or pullback.
- Tunneling and mining slurries: Help control slurry viscosity and keep fines dispersed for easier pumping and separation.
